Education
HI GUYS!
Education has always been an issue in my family, since they have always told me that to be someone in life I must study and have a professional degree; with which I have always disagreed since, for me, a person is worth more for what they are than for the opportunities they have (in terms of studies, jobs, etc.) from my personal experience, from a very young age I have been in against some methods that are used to measure their performance in schools to the point that before finishing basic education my parents threatened to enroll me in a military school, after that I openly said that I would not enter any university since it was very overrated and the truth is that there are still things that make me think the same.
so basically, it felt like this:
Now when I
say this it may sound contradictory, I do not deny it, even for me it was a
surprise to decide to do this. And the truth is funny how I ended up here,
since, despite having always been against the school's methods, and many other
things that this entails (as I could clearly notice the educational differences
between my school and that of some friends who were enrolled in private
schools) the truth is that, although I did not pay much attention in class,
somehow I managed to get good grades, perhaps it was because my mother In spite
of everything, she always worried about what subjects of history, language,
etc, were everyday topics for us.
The fact is that in high school I was determined to finish school and start working, but after so much insistence on the part of my parents, I decided that to please them I would try to try the things they wanted for me. After many things happened in the field of seeking a profession with what little was left in my head after years of repeating the same subjects in school (where, being a religious school, the teachers were more interested That we know how to pray before we know who Einstein was.) I decided to make a small deal with my parents, I would take the PTU and only if I could get a scholarship or some kind of financial aid, I would go to study.
I must
emphasize that I never took a book to try to study or something while taking
the exam, since I was not really interested in the least bit to continue
studying. At the time of taking the test, I realized that the teaching
differences between the schools were abysmal, since while my school taught me
half of what was asked, some boys from a paid school were talking about how
easy it was and that at their school they asked more difficult questions;
Clearly thanks to that I thought I would not have scholarships or anything. But
when the day of the results arrived, SURPRISE, I had financial aid and the
University of Chile had accepted me. It almost felt like someone had taken my
pride and thrown it away, I had nothing to do but go to college. With the passage
of time I must say that some of those prejudices have disappeared, but there
are still times I prefer to omit the name of my university since, when saying
it, people actually see you with different eyes and I do not like that.
Conversing with some of my colleagues, they have also made comments that, for
my taste, are quite classist when they refer to other institutions and that has
also been the subject of discussion, since as I said, I do not think that
because you are in a university you are a A better person and I don't think
that being part of a renowned university will make you a better student since
given my history, it clearly is not.
I know it is a somewhat long story and with
many contradictions, but it is 100% real and the truth seems to me something
funny when life gives you directly on pride. And whether you see it as good
luck or bad luck to me, now it's just one more story to work on my way and see
how it ends.
Hello! I found your position on education interesting, since I think some similar things about it. I believe that today it is not enough simply to have a university degree, it is important to add work experiences, even if it is not in the area in which you will work in the future and to generate connections with many people. Without that, the degree is worth very little to me. Greetings.
ResponderEliminarHi! It's a funny story, life takes many turns and in my opinion sometimes we have to learn to pursue what one likes and ignore the prejudices of the rest.
ResponderEliminarHi!
ResponderEliminarFirst, thanks for sharing your story, it was very interesting. Second, I totally agree with you that being in a university doesn't make you better than someone else. For example, a relative of mine didn't go to college, but she went to a professional institute, and now she has a good job. It is not necessary to go to college, we have other options, however the perception in Chile is that you need to have a professional degree to emerge, which should be changed as well as the educational system.

ResponderEliminarHello Leonora, I share much thing with you.
ResponderEliminarI think the same as you about the name of the University. Lamentably, for a alone name, the people speculate about the studies and you trajectory. In my personal, I dont like this, because the people end up highlighting you for the name of the University of Chile, before that for the achievements that you had in the student trajectory. This is a prejudice that should change
Hey Leonora, just like you I think that if you study in a university it doesn't make you a better person, that comment just shows how classist our society is, as well as in which university you go to. We have to stop prejudging people, if they didn't go to university maybe it's because they couldn't or maybe because they DIDN'T WANT to. University is not for everyone and that's ok.
ResponderEliminarYes, how important it is to have a study routine. In my case, studying in the morning helps me. I wake up around 6:30 am and my mind is so clear that I move faster. The only bad thing is that at 20:00 pm I am very sleepy. Good advices.
